BRINGING THEM HOME
Joining a new family is a big change for a little Yorkie. Give him a warm cosy place where he will feel safe while he adapts. Yorkies don’t want to be alone; they want to be close to the family.
LOVE THEM, LOVE THEM & LOVE THEM SOME MORE!!!!
- Travel kennel, dog bed or pillow with warm blanket.
- Bowls for food and water.
- High quality food.
- Safe, chew proof toys.
MALES vs. FEMALES?
Both female and male Yorkies make wonderful companions. It all depends on your personal preferences and your Yorkie’s environmental influences, genetic traits, learned behaviours and training.
Yorkie’s do have their own unique personality, so it is not accurate or fair to make a statement about males or females temperaments. You should be able to buy a male or female, depending on your personal needs. They are both pleasant, loving and very playful.
Yorkies are very smart, so start training your puppy from the very first day. Let your puppy out first thing in the morning, after every meal, after drinking, after naps and before bedtime.
Never shout, shake or strike at your puppy if he has an accident. Be kind and consistent in your training. Always praise the puppy when doing the correct / expected thing.
Make use of a potty pad
FOOD AND TREATS
If you feed your Yorkie a high – quality dog food, vitamin and mineral supplements are unnecessary.
IMPORTANT TO PREVENT BEGGING!!!
- Do not allow your Yorkie in the kitchen when you are cooking.
- Do not allow your Yorkie in the dining room when you are eating.
- Do not feed him from the table when begging for food.
YORKIE FEEDING GUIDELINES
|Weaning to 8 weeks||Every 3 hours|
|8 – 12 weeks||Every 4 hours|
|12 – 24 weeks||Every 5 -6 hours|
|6 months and older||Every 6 – 8 hours|
Once a day feeding is never enough for a Yorkshire terrier.
Yorkies need several small meals throughout the day.
High quality protein is the most important factor in your Yorkie’s diet. It is essential for good health. If your Yorkie does not receive enough high quality food in her diet, she cannot grow a beautiful coat.
Some Yorkies and for that matter many dogs can develop allergies to corn, cornmeal, corn oil, wheat and wheat gluten.
PLEASE MAKE USE OF THE VET AND BUY GOOD QUALITY FOOD AND TREATS.
GROOMING & GOOD PRODUCTS
A beautiful coat starts by buying a healthy, quality Yorkie from a reputable breeder. Use only products designed to use in dogs to ensure a PH balance for canine/ skin including excellent shampoos and conditioners.
Wampum and Tropiclean have a wonderful range of products.
Brush teeth with dog dentifrice, recommended by your Vet and use anti-bacterial mouth spray to keep the teeth healthy and smelling fresh.
…..SOMETHING TO REMEMBER …..
Yorkies think they are big and though, and they act like it. They are very brave and they think they are big enough to take on bigger and stronger dogs.
They are a small breed with a huge attitude. After all, they are terriers through and through!!!
